Example 1: 

This is a kind of activity that invites learners to speak about their personal experience. It has all the characteristics of a task: 1) This work plan specifies what the participants in the task are supposed to do, in this case in a quite unstructured way. 2) The primary focus is obviously on meaning. Learner A has to use his/her own linguistic resources to talk about his/her experience while learner B is free to ask questions. 3) The language use corresponds to a natural communicative event, i.e., telling people about our worth to tell personal experiences. 4) The task involves oral language use. 5) The cognitive operations are relatively simple as student A should recall a happy moment and make an account of it. 6) The fact that student B draws a picture of what happened provides for a clear outcome of the task. 


Example 2: 

This activity has some features of a task. It provides a work plan for an oral interaction and to some extent, the participants are free to choose the linguistic resources to use (how to ask for help, refuse, etc.). Also, the resulting interaction might be similar to an authentic interaction. However, the primary focus is on form rather than meaning - the meanings are given so the learners can find the correct forms to encode the meaning. Also, the only outcome of the activity is the performance itself. It does not result in an outcome to show that this is completed. This activity does not constitute a task, rather than an exercise for practising language.
