Task (Video 2)

This video will provide an example of a task and how to lead it.  The sample topic is movies, so you will learn how to teach idioms to suggest and expressions for agreement/disagreement.  Lastly, you will learn how to support your students while they use the target vocabulary.

Below are the key-elements of the video:

The Task Cycle is the second phase of TBLT. It is the most important phase, because this is when students work alone, in pairs or in groups without the help of the teacher and try to communicate a message.

The Task Cycle is divided into two phases:

  1. Task > Students solve a communication problem without the help of the teacher;
  2. Report > Students tell the class how they worked

Follow these guidelines carefully to work well with your students.

  • Divide your students into pairs and ask them to choose 3 or 5 films that represent a film genre. You can use the genres your students used in the pre-task;
  • Ask the students to discuss in pairs whether a film belongs to a film genre or not. To make this discussion they should use expressions that indicate suggestion, agreement or disagreement. For example:

 - For the genre.... we would say the film...;

 - For the genre.... we could choose the movie....

 - Okay, I agree with you because....

 - Your proposal is good because....

 - I disagree with you because....

Help your students only if they can't really communicate. But don't give grammatical corrections. This is not the time.

  • When your students have finished talking, ask them to write lists of films for each film genre. Then ask them to present their lists to the whole class. This way your students can practise both writing and speaking. At this time, you can start giving feedback to your students.

When you have finished the Task Cycle, you can move on to the Post-Task
